"Rev. Philip K. Hanna and Rev. George A. Colbert will be remembered as the earliest Methodist ministers.  In those days the circuit rider was a feature of the landscape.  With his well-equipped saddlebags and his stout horse, he pervaded the prairie and forest, carrying glad tidings of great joy to the scattered populace.  He even ante-dated the gaudy red peddler wagon, with its glittering tin ware and huge hummocks of rag bag...  At first these preachers gathered their congregations in the groves, which Bryant calls 'God's first temples.'  In the winter they gathered in a settler's cabin.   Later on they flocked to the district schoolhouses." George A. Colbert's birthplace:
Samantha Stagg in 1880 shows SC for her father and TN for her mother.
George F. in 1880 shows VA for his father and TN for his mother
Betsy Ann in 1880 shows VA for her father and TN for her mother.
Martha Talcott in 1880 shows KY for her father and KY for her mother (Mary Ann)
Alex Colbert found in 1880 in Hamilton Co, 38, b. IL  doesn't know where either one of his parents were born.
John Colbert in 1880 has father born in NC and mother in IL (Mary Ann)
James Colbert in 1880 has father and mother both born in TN (Mary Ann)

I believe Alexander Colbert is George's brother.  In 1850 & 60 he showed that he was born in VA. It is little wonder that the children of George A. Colbert did not know where their father had been born.  Until 1792 what would be the state of Kentucky was known as Kentucky Co., VA and the area which would be the state of Tennessee, was Tennessee CO, North Caroline.  In addition to this there is the controversy over the Walker line creating   confusion as to if the section was Kentucky or Tennessee. This would be enough to confuse anyone.

Something  interesting is the middle names of some of the children. They seem to be named after M.E. Methodist ministers: William Mckendree, John and Samuel Ford, and George Fletcher.
