Seeking Records for Ann Elizabeth “Annie” Calvert b1830 d1911
Photo of Ann Calvert Kiger – unproven Photo
Introduction
Some preliminary research information is needed. Ann Calvert was the
daughter of John D. Calvert and Ellinor
Thralls. She was born ca. July, 1830 probably, Greene County, Pennsylvania but
certainly in Pennsylvania. Since the Calverts and even Kigers were residents of
Greene County, this must have been the location in this time frame. The Husband of Ann Calvert was George W. Kiger who was born in Pennsylvania(Likely in Greene County) and the couple, according to family records was that they married in 1848. Proof of the marriage has not been forthcoming in the search for Records in Pennsylvania or Virginia. We have sought this information in several counties of both states to no avail.
Photo of George Kiger
I have not been able to find proof that Anna is truly the daughter of John D. Calvert. It appears to fit the circumstances and there is likely evidence that Anna Calvert married George W. Kiger ca. 1848 Tyler County (Later Wetzel County, WV), Virginia and that she was indeed John’s daughter. I have not been able to find the marriage record. It may have been recorded in the Wetzel County Marriage Book Volume 2 which was destroyed in a flood at New Martinsville, West Virginia. New effort has been to seek information of the marriage in other counties of Virginia and Pennsylvania. The records for this period of time for the counties that became West Virginia counties is problematic.
We are on firm ground in positing that Ann Frances Calvert, ca. 1830, as a daughter of John D. Calvert and his wife “Nellie” Ellinor Thralls Calvert. In the 1860 census of Tyler County, Virginia, a John Calvert b 1838 (age 22) is living in the household and is listed as a farm laborer. Using all the known Calvert’s of the time in Monongalia ,Tyler, Wetzel, Marshall counties of VA & later West Virginia as well as Greene or Washington County, Pennsylvania the only John Calvert that was born in 1838 +/- 1 year was John Sipe Calvert, younger brother of Ann Calvert.
George Kiger died in 1885 and Ann Elizabeth died in 1911 according to the tombstone at the Higgins Cemetery in Wetzel County, WV as shown here:

An historical view of Ann’s ancestry
John D. Calvert was the son of Thomas Clare Calvert and Anna Ewing. In Greene County, A map of households shows that John Calvert’s home was on the border of Wayne and Perry Townships.: Ref: 1865’s McConnell's Land Map.
John Calvert, father of Ann Calvert, was b 1804 and died in 1896.
John Calvert married first, Ellinor Thralls and had 7 children. They lived in the home place until son Richard was married and then Richard took over the farm. John moved to Rudolph Run about a half mile above Brock and had a water mill that had been built on Shannon Run. This may be another proof of which family line we are dealing with. I have to presume that Shannon is important as a surname as a son of Albert Gallatin Calvert was named Shannon Wiley Calvert.
Tombstone of John D. Calvert
The Children of John D and Ellinor Thralls Calvert are listed below as well as the Children with Margaret Marshall.
About the time John moved to Rudolph Run his wife, Ellinor died. He then married Margaret Marshall(his counsin) and they had four children. By 1870 John had moved back next to son Richard. Children of this marriage are also found below.
John, Richard and
Richards two sons, Thomas and John continued to live on or adjoining the home
farm. John, Richard and Richard's sons built homes on Calvert Hollow, now named
Thomas Run about 1/2 mile from Blacksville toward Brock. (Notes of Alva
Headlee).
Note: Alva Headlee
states John and Ellenor had 7 children, and John and Margaret had 4 children in
his document filed at the Greene County Genealogy Society. Alvah Headlee was
the librarian at the Waynesburg, Pennsylvania Library.
Note: Census records
show John and Eleanor had 10 children but 3 died young according to tombstones
beside John and Eleanor.
John Calvert’s death
certificate in Greene County shows:
Calvert, John, white, male, age 92, single and that he was born at
Mapletown, Greene County. He was a farmer whose death occurred on October, 16
1896, Wayne Township. Cause of Death Old Age, 10 days ill, Blacksville, WV.
The 1881 Waynesburg Newspaper Article: "History From Our Old Friend"
Waynesburg Newspaper About 1881. A copy of the article wsa found in the Archives of Greene County Genealogical society and probably was an issue of the Waynesburg Republican.
On Saturday last
Mr. John Calvert of Wayne Township came into our office and paid his
subscription. He wore the old-time red warmers, a garment getting to be very
rare in the latter days of starch and style.
In fact since the
demise of Mr. Pettit of Morris Township we did not know of any other in Greene
County who still clung to the revolutionary relic. Mr. Calvert was ruddy and
hearty and jolly and looked the very personification of health and strength.
One of those big
little men stout and tough and tireless and we were at once interested and
astonished when in the routine of conversation.
He revealed the
fact that he was about 77 years of age.
We interviewed
our old friend and found him agreeable, communicative and only regretful that he
could not more accurately answer the numerous queries with which we plied him.
He was the son of
Thomas Calvert, who died a few years ago at the advanced age of 101.
His grandfather
died at the age of about 100.
His mother died
at the age of 73 and was Irish descent.
His grandmother
lived the full age of 100 - and was born on ship aboard of a German vessel
during passage to this country.[John is referring to his Maternal Grandmother
in this statement—Faney Bulet-JB]
His great
grandmother's maiden name was Bullet, came from Germany and lived to be 113.
His uncle Zeke
Calvert, or Colbert as he was called where he lived, died some years ago in the
104th year of his age.
Two aunts still
survive. Polly Marshall living near Blacksville - he does not know her exact
age but he presumes to be in her 98th year - she is the mother of 12 children,
the grandmother of upwards of 140, the great grandmother of many and has
several great great grand children.
Aunt Peggy who is
2 years younger than Aunt Polly married a man by the name of Farlow and moved
long ago to the State of Iowa.
Mr. Calvert said
his ancestors came to this country along with the Bailys from Bucks and
Lancaster County, England and located in the Carmichaels Settlement at a very
early day promising to look up the subject and report more at length.
He bade us a
rollicking goodbye and tripped down the stairs as lightly as a lass."
Accompanying
notes
John D.
Calvert was 77 in 1881. John's father was Thomas Calvert who married Anna
Ewing. Anna died in 1848. Thomas married a second time, Johann Margaret
Lemmons. John's grandfather was Isaac Calvert and grandmother was Frances
“Fanny” Bulet. He probably did not know that the mother of Thomas would have
been Elizabeth Gart. not have known that Thomas had previously married
Elizabeth Gart who was his true grandamother. Isaac married twice, his first
wife was Elizabeth Gart whom he wed at Old Swedes Church in New Castle County,
Delaware.
Decidedly, Fanny’s mother was “Faney Bulet” at least by inference. A Faney Bulet is buried in the Thomas Calvert Section of the Blacksville Cemetery in Greene County, PA. The tombstone is a hand carved stone with just the inscription of the name: “Faney Bulet”. A note was inserted above reflecting this in John's Newspaper Article of 1881.
Faney Bulet MUST BE the maternal grandmother to whom John D was referring saying she was born on a ship from Germany. However, Isaac Calvert married first, Elzabeth Gart in 1768 and she is very likely the mother of Thomas, not Fanny. If that is the case, her maiden surname remains unknown (unlike in the Article unless she had a child out of wedlock). John wouldn’t know about Elizabeth Gart and as the family more informs us, Fanny was the highly respected Grandmother to the younger generation.
The locale where she met and married a Bulet is unknown. Faney's Parents likely resided in the Chester County (Greater Philadelphia area). A search for a husband is ongoing. If she was born on a vessel from Germany, it may have been that she was French Which the surname appears to indicate.
Anna Ewing’s parents, according to researcher David Bell are provided as Nathaniel and Rebecca Osborne Ewing.
Uncle Zeke was Exekiel Calvert who married Rhoda Debolt. He lived in the next drainage from where Thomas Calvert’s plantation was located, not far from John who lived near Brock, Greene County, Pennsylvania.
John’s Aunt, Mary Calvert, married James Marshall from who Margaret Marshall
descended.

We are Seeking Records for Ann Elizabeth Calvert and her husband George W
Kiger.
I am seeking other sources including bible records that would show not only the marriage of Anna Calvert and George Kiger but her birth record too.
I am also seeking proof that the picture I have attached here of Anna Calvert so as to ascertain that this is truly her.
John D. Calvert, born in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1804, was the son of Thomas C. Calvert b 1769 in Chester County Pennsylvania. The first wife of Thomas was Anna Ewing. John D. Calvert is the grandson of Isaac Calvert who maried 2nd, Frances “Fanny” Bulet.
George W. Kiger born in Greene County Pennsylvania in all likelihood. According to his tombstone he was born in 1820 but his death record shows 1819. George was the son of James McClelland Kiger and Ella A. Donelson. His death record is below:
The Wetzel County death record of George Kiger which is attached here says he was born ca. 21 July 1819 since he was 65 years, 5 months and 2 days old when he died. He died 23 December 1885. He is buried at the Higgins Cemetery on Rt. 89 near West Post office along with Ann.
In the 1850 Census, George and wife are shown to have been born in Pennsylvania. The Given name as shown is problematic as well. (See below):
We cannot account for the use of the given name Frances in the census. It appears that someone of the area or a member of the family provided the information or the census taker erred in recording the name of Ann as “Frances”. There is no record anywhere that George Kiger married a woman named “Frances”. Some researchers give Ann two middle names due to this census. We believe it is a census error.
This area of Wetzel County is in the middle of the “Calvert Country”. Ancestors of David Bell lived on Route 89 between Silver Hill and West Post Office. The Calvert bar owned by John Ewing Calvert was located at West. Many other Calvert’s kin to Albert Gallatin Calvert who was born in 1830 in Monongalia County Virginia lived in this area.
The Census of 1870 provides the following view of George and Ann Calvert. Please note that this census also shows Ann Calvert Kiger as born in Virginia but we believe this is an error on the part of the Census taker or information provider as noted for the 1850 census.
See the Census Record for 1870 below:
The Census of 1860 provides the most solid clue as to the parentage of Ann
Calvert Kiger. It lists John Calvert in the Kiger HH, b 1838 ca. And is age 22. This fits what know about John Calvert(Jr) and is almost undeniable that this John is the son of John D Calvert and wife Ellinor. He fits the profile for John b1838 and there were no other John Calverts possible that we know about at this time frame.
George and Ann Calvert Kiger With John Calvert in the HH, US Census, 1860
George and Annie’s Census is found below. Attached at the end of the document are the Census Records for George and Annie in 1880, the Census for Theodore Kiger(son of George and Annie) for 1900. Annie is living in Theodores resident at this time. In 1910, she is in the home of her son-in-law, Ira Miller. All three Census record images are provided at the end of this document.
I have attached here the tombstone photo of George And Anna Kiger taken in 1969.
It looks like the death of Anna ( Calvert ) Kiger was not reported in 1911. I checked the West Virginia Archives and nothing found. A family bible would be an interesting find which might include the date of death of Anna Kiger but the tombstone indicates 1911.

I hope someone would come forward and share the missing links about Anna ( Calvert ) Kiger. The purpose of this work is to provide information to others. What I ask is all I ask that this be shared and if possible, please provide feedback and information.

SEEKING PROOF OF ANN CALVERT KIGER’S FATHER
We know a lot about the Calverts of Southwestern PA and Northern Counties of Virginia. One of David Bell’s first genealogy photos was of the tombstone for George W and Ann E Calvert at the Higgins Cemetery in Wetzel County, West Virginia taken in 1969. The Census of 1860 provides a solid indication that living in the household of George and Ann is her brother, age 22, born in 1838, John Calvert. Sylvia Whitaker provided information that his middle name was Sipe. This is not primary proof because we don’t have evidence that this John is indeed the son of John D. Calvert. However, as noted, John’s son was the only John Calvert who fit’s the birth time frame to be recorded in the Census and is solid evidence that Ann Calvert was the daughter of John D Calvert and his wife Ellinor.
